Before the arrival of the railroad, Newport Beach was nearly destitute, with a population of just over 200 citizens.  How things would change.  In 1905, the city was connected by railroad with downtown LA, which meant nothing but money to local landholders, developers and businessmen.  Settlers filled the Peninsula, West Newport, Newport Island, Balboa Island and Lido Isle and the population grew exponentially before leveling off to today's total.
