About Fairfield
With a population of about 110,000 (2016) Fairfield ranks as the 60th largest city in California.
The city is named by a Clipper Captain after his hometown in Connecticut. The city's main economic stimulus comes from Travis Air Force Base, employing up to 15,000 people in recent years.
The Fairfield area was first settled, as far as we know, by the Ion culture dating back 5,000 years.
The first recorded Europeans reported to have settled in the area were Spanish infantry (1810). The Spanish militia were in pursuit of the Suisun Indians, wanting to kick their butt, or worse. Interestingly, after the Mexicans revolted against Spain, the Suisun Indians became close allies with their former foes. The Indians were given land grants, which later fell into the hands of Connecticut captain, Robert Waterman. This astute businessman parcelled out the Fairfield lands and won the bid for the county seat. In 1903 Fairfield was incorporated.
Today Fairfield's economy is almost entirely based on the public and military sectors. America should wake up because private industry is generally a miniscule part of local economies. As in, maybe you want to make your own clothes, manufacture your own computers and grow your own food? What a novel idea.
