Walgreens going greener with new cannabis-infused products

Not to be outdone by CVS, a direct competitor is putting the “green” in Walgreens.

Walgreens announced this week that it would be stocking 1,500 stores in nine states with CBD-infused products such as sprays, patches, balms, and creams, although they have not yet specified which specific brands or items they will carry.

The products will be restricted to Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Vermont, as these states have legalized medical cannabis.

“Marijuana has been used to relieve pain, digestive and psychological disorders for more than 3,000 years—but the efficacy, safety and legality of the drug are still widely debated,” Walgreens wrote in an official blog post. “Research on the health benefits of marijuana is ongoing, but current studies have proven that cannabinoid receptors play an important role in many body processes, including metabolic regulation, cravings, pain, anxiety, bone growth and immune function.”

 

 

CBD, like THC, is a cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis plants. Both have psychoactive properties, but CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning it doesn’t impair users or produce a “high.” CBD is used to treat a diverse array of illnesses such as anxiety, inflammation, paediatric epilepsy, and its effects are being explored in other applications such as the treatment of mood disorders and pain.

Hemp-derived CBD is federally legal thanks to last year’s Farm Bill, and CBD for medical consumption is legal in 46 US states and territories. It is more heavily regulated in Canada, as are all cannabinoids per the Cannabis Act.
