HOUSTON, TX / ACCESSWIRE / April 16, 2019 / Patent applications from cannabis companies offer a look into the battle to secure intellectual properties in the U.S.
Often, they can provide insight into what companies are tinkering with, and show companies that are trying to play defense against rivals who may try to inch into the space with similar items. Patents can also provide a bird's eye view into company views of industry trends.
We have to consider that legal cannabis sales just in the U.S. are expected to reach nearly $23 billion by 2025, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. CBD sales are expected to reach nearly $1.9 billion by 2022. Such explosive growth is forcing companies to sit up and take notice across multiple major industries.
That's because the legalization of cannabis offers an incredible opportunity for companies to now establish themselves as dominant players with patents in hand.
Some of the most notable companies to file patent applications include The Yield Growth Corporation (CSE: BOSS)(OTCQB: BOSQF), Canopy Growth Corporation (TO: WEED)(NYSE: CGC), and Tilray Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY).
The Yield Growth Corporation (BOSS)(BOSQF) just announced that subsidiary Urban Juve filed a patent application to protect its inventions for hemp root oil and its use in certain formulas, titled "Cannabis Root Extract, Method of Manufacture, Method of Use".
The application claims priority to 11 US patents filed in the last year by the company, and contains claims to a method of manufacture of cannabis root oil, as well as use of that oil as an active ingredient in various formulations for use as therapeutics and cosmetics. The patent application can be used as a basis for obtaining patent protection in over 170 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, Brazil, Japan, and Australia.
The patent application covers Urban Juve's extraction technology which uses proprietary methods for processing root oil. The patent claims to increase the quantity of desirable active compounds recovered from the root, and further enhance the bioavailability of the cannabis root product by nanoization.
