Miss Marijuana beauty pageant is taking place in the U.S. And itâs looking downright sexist.
At this state-level competition, contestants will make their way to the next round through an online voting system and will compete in three categories: personal interview question, swimsuit, and evening gown. âUnlike many pageants, ours does not include a talent performance competition,â the official site says. The finale is set to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is open to residents in Canada and the U.S.
As per the companyâs Facebook post, 5000 contestants have pre-registered since the announcement on Mar. 11.
âIâve talked to 3 dispensaries and 2 casinos here in Vegas, about this and they havenât heard of this event,â writes Facebook user Samantha Sunshine. âNo proof of legitimacy, and theyâre transphobic. Smells like a big olâ scam to me,â notes another Facebook user Hannah Winans.

Â
The pageant is for âyoung, single (unmarried) and natural born womenâ only. Itâs also for the âtype of girl all the guys want, and all the girls want to be friends withâ¦â The official site then follows it up with example photos of what a potential Miss Marijuana might look like.
Â
The pageant is aimed to represent one of the fastest growing industries and comes with a cash prize of USD $25,000 (approx. CAD$33, 361), and a Miss Marijuana car. âWhat makes this pageant special is that youâll be the first ever Miss Marijuana, an honor only one young lady will ever achieve. You will be representing an industry with product lines for makeup, medicine, clothing, building products, and 50,000 other items that come from hemp-based plants,â the site reads.

âI was going to say that it was about as gross as having a wine beauty pageant,â writes Lisa Campbell, CEO of Toronto-based Lifford Cannabis Solutions, in a Twitter post. âThen I looked on twitter and learned this was actually a thing in BC. Industry awards for all genders should be based on talent not beauty IMO. Reducing women to objects.â
