On a per-share basis, the Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it had net income of $1.03. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, came to $1.04 per share.
The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 89 cents per share.
The rehabilitation hospital operator posted revenue of $1.12 billion in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.11 billion.
Encompass Health expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.71 to $3.85 per share, with revenue in the range of $4.5 billion to $4.6 billion.
Encompass Health shares have risen nearly 2 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $62.66, an increase of 9 percent in the last 12 months.
