Lizzie Post, the great-great-granddaughter of iconic etiquette maven Emily Post, is following in her relative’s footsteps. Although it may not have been what the elder Ms. Post originally had in mind.

Emily’s 1922 book Etiquette: In Society, In Business, In Politics and At Home provides readers with direction on signing condolence cards, sending invitations, congratulating loved ones on specific events and even the appropriate length for a tablecloth.

She did not, however, address the etiquette of passing to the left, bogarting the spliff or accepting a bong hit.

Enter Lizzie Post, 36, with Higher Etiquette: A Guide to the World of Cannabis, from Dispensaries to Dinner Parties. The upcoming guide to polite pot consumption includes advice about dos and don’ts, canoeing joints, how many times to hit a blunt, how to share a bowl, what a dab is, and tipping your budtender.

With federal legalization having come into force in Canada and state-level legalization occurring in many U.S. states, the stoner stigma is starting to evaporate and it becomes more and more likely that one may encounter cannabis in a social situation–and learning appropriate cannabis courtesy is more relevant than ever. For the uninitiated, the book provides definitions, explanation and background information as well as advice on how to get baked with decorum; for the seasoned stoner, it could make a great gift to friends and family interested in weed but unsure about where to start.

Higher Etiquette is set to be released on March 26 from Ten Speed Press.
