Cypress Hill will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, making them the first Latino hip-hop group to receive the distinction. Their star, the 2,660th on the iconic Walk of Fame, is in the Recording category and will be dedicated at a ceremony to be held Thursday morning.
âWe are proud to honor the first Latino American hip-hop recording group,â said Ana Martinez, the producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a press release. âThey have been successful as a group for three decades and we know they will continue their success for many years to come.â
The induction ceremony will be hosted by Rana Ghadban, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who will be joined by George Lopez and Xzibit for the unveiling of the star. Cypress Hill will celebrate the event with a show at the famous Whiskey a Go Go on Sunset Boulevard Thursday night. They are also scheduled to perform at a 4/20 festival at Sunset Beach Park in Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday, although park officials on Monday asked organizers of the free event to drop them from the lineup in an effort to control the size of the crowd.
Cypress HillâB Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs, and Eric âBoboâ Correaâbroke into the national hip-hop scene in 1991 with the release of their debut album Cypress Hill. In 1993 it was followed by Black Sunday, which went to number one on the Billboard 200 album chart fueled by the success of the song âInsane in the Brain.â The group was the first Latino hip-hop group to receive platinum and multi-platinum album status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Cypress Hill recently released their ninth studio album, Elephants on Acid, billed as a rap odyssey that âtakes listeners around the world and through other dimensions while preserving the dynamism for which the group became known.â
The group began in the Los Angeles neighborhood of South Gate and has continued to support their community through work with Wounded Heroes of America, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Guns for Goods, a buyback program to take guns off the streets of L.A., where they still live.
Cypress Hillâs star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be unveiled Thursday, April 18 on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Green Leaf Restaurant at Eastown at 11:30 a.m. The event will be live streamed exclusively on the Hollywood Walk of Fame website.
