Pot is legal but having it within reach in the car isn’t, Lennox and Addington County OPP warns.

The detachment says it’s issuing $215 tickets to an increasing number of drivers and remind that the Cannabis Control Act says that drivers and boaters can’t have cannabis in their vehicle or boat, whether or not it’s in motion.

The exception is for cannabis that is in its original and unopened packaging or is stowed in baggage that is fastened shut or is is not otherwise readily available to anyone in the vehicle or boat.

And driving drugged or drunk is always a crime, the detachment warned.

“If you suspect a driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, immediately call 911 to report it — the life you save may be your own.”
