Border Patrol authorities discovered a very different variety of trees this week in Beaver Island State Park at Grand Island, NY. Agents reported seeing a suspicious helicopter flying unusually low and hovering over the parking lot just after 8 pm on Wednesday evening.

After a brief search of the area, authorities discovered four bright red duffel bags containing a total of 108lbs of cannabis in the brush just off a popular hiking trail. Each duffel held 25 plastic bags of the drug, and the total street value of the find is estimated at over USD $150,000.

Border Patrol informed the Erie County Sheriff’s Office of the discovery, who subsequently completed another search with sniffer dogs and air surveillance but found nothing.

“Border Patrol agents are the nation’s first line of defense. U.S. Federal Law prohibits the importation of marijuana and our agents will continue to enforce the law to prevent the illegal importation of narcotics, including marijuana”, said Buffalo Station Patrol Agent in Charge Jeffrey Wilson.

Authorities at the local, state and federal level are continuing to investigate, and anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-331-0353.

Although New York was widely expected to become one of many states to legalize adult-use cannabis this year, Governor Andrew Cuomo recently dropped the bid from the State budget.
