The Plant Breeder is responsible for breeding, development, and introduction of competitive proprietary varieties into production. The Plant Breeder will work intimately with crop populations and cultivation teams to perform crosses, evaluations, and plant selections. Activities include planning, organizing and executing the breeding strategy, developing and optimizing breeding designs and field trials, managing Breeder Seed, and overseeing all breeding databases. Analyzing data generated from multiple locations in a timely fashion is critical. Work must be conducted within very strict deadlines to achieve long term strategic objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for optimizing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of the plant breeding program
Plan and organize all yearly activities in accordance with company goals, budgets, and timelines
Evaluate and improve phenotyping procedures and protocols
Develop novel methods for integrated analysis of genotype by environment
Utilization of all relevant breeding technologies with appropriate allocation of resources
Develop a complete knowledge of germplasm and the relatedness to commercial products
Create and advance new commercial cultivars, inbreds, and hybrids
Perform statistical analysis on large and complex data sets for variance components and etc. to optimize the breeding program
Identify sources of new, economically valuable traits and incorporate into breeding material using traditional crossbreeding techniques and molecular markers
Move multiple breeding lines forward simultaneously across field locations, greenhouses, and breeding facilities
Plan nursery and grower trials and coordinate winter nursery planting
Oversee all bulk seed generation for production field plantings
Create and maintain an impeccable organizational structure to record and track breeding progress
Maintain a good balance of business acumen and artisanal creativity
Author reports, proposals, and present data to company departments in simple, concise, and actionable manner
Manage and oversee all data collection for IP portfolio development as directed
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
In depth working knowledge of horticulture, agronomy, genetics, pathology, quantitative statistics, physiology, and molecular genetics
Expertise in statistical programming languages (R, SAS, etc.)
Proven leadership skills for partnering, communicating, and working with cross-functional and cross-cultural teams
Ability to make sound judgments, quick decisions, and informed arguments to lead and influence the Cultivation R&D team with elegance and flexibility
Ability to travel independently to national and international ag partners as required
Qualifications
Education:
PhD in plant breeding or related field
Minimum 5+ years of hands on experience in plant breeding (post grad)
