Her family moved to Humboldt at age twelve into a shoddy cabin in the middle of a forested 80 acres, where the closest neighbor was a 2 mile hike or quad ride away. She lived for the next decade in a house under constant construction. Growing up in rural Southern Humboldt it was taboo to ask someone what they did for a living. Most children have memories of hiding from CAMP and have a legitimate fear of police and helicopters. Weed was the norm, a culturally accepted secret that no one discussed.
1996
They met through a mutual friend, fell in love and started a life together. While she attended Humboldt State University, he worked a 9 to 5 construction job. Weekends were spent building the cabin on the land. Growing up with a feast or famine way of life, depending if the crop was CAMPED or not, caused them both to value steady employment. They both got their first jobs at age 14, since their parents refused them to work on the farm. Growing was just a way of life. You didn't want to depend on it, but it provided. The both valued hard work, living off the grid and participating in community.
