"Indian people have lived along the California coast for thousands of years ......and for thousands of years, Indian canoes have carried people and cargo up and down the Pacific Coast. According to archaeological evidence, nearly 30,000 years ago, Indian people were cooking and eating pygmy mammoth on Santa Rosa Island."
The Santa Maria Valley was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples that lived well off the land and sea. These people are remembered for their invention of type of a seagoing canoe called the Tomol. This very sophisticated seaworthy vessel was constructed (preferably) from redwood planks and was up to 30 feet long. There is a lot of speculation and even scholarly opinion that these canoe-building peoples originated in part from Polynesia.
In 1769, the indigenous people's lives and culture would be shattered forever. The Spanish settled in the Santa Maria Valley and established several missions after an exploratory mission.
Before the Mexican war of independence in 1821, land was literally given away to European elites and heros. After the war, Mexico deeded the land and sold off plots to individuals.
In 1848, the Hispanic world forever changed with Mexican-American War. Anglo-Americans would run the show and take over the lands. Thanks to some of the richest soil found anywhere, the Santa Maria River Valley would become one of the most productive agricultural areas in the US of A and beyond. Infact, to this day, agriculture remains a key component to the economy.
In or around 1870, settlers built their an amalgamation of houses near present-day Broadway and Main. Quick growth followed and by 1885, the maturing settlement was officially named Santa Maria. Oil was discovered around 1900 and the Union Oil Company began pumping tons of black gold. Many locals sharing in the profits with the spin off industries that supported the oil men and their dogs.
