About LIVERMORE 

With a population of about 83,000 people, Livermore is the 93rd largest city in California. 

In 1840s Livermore was founded and named after Robert Livermore, the friend of founder William Mendenhall.  Livermore is perhaps best known for its super world-class Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where many an earth shattering discovery was made, including the discovery and synthesis a new element; livermorium.  What other city has its name on the periodic table?

The forebearer settlement was incorporated more than two hundred years ago in 1796 under the guidance of Spaniard, Franciscan Mission San Jose.  The Spanish teamed up with the local indigenous peoples to run farming and cattle ranching operations.  However, this new workforce was decimated by the diseases brought by the white man - death rates were 50% and higher.

The site of groundbreaking physics experiments was largely sheep, cattle, and horse pasture until the 20th century.  Herds ran wild without fencing and were culled once a year.

After the Spanish-Mexican War, most of Californian lands, including those about Livermore were transferred from Mexican to Anglo American hands.
Interestingly, Robert Livermore (1799-1858) was a British citizen that jumped ship in California in 1822 and became a naturalized Mexican citizen. After working as a ranch foreman, Livermore married the daughter rich Jose Loreto Higuera,and was soon master of a. rancho by 1839.  Wow.

Livermore had a profound interest in farming;  viticulture and horticulture, cattle and horses, vineyards and orchards of pears and olives; much of which he was instrumental in bringing to the land.   As the Americans took control of California in 1847 and gold was discovered in 1848, Livermore made a bundle by selling longhorn cattle to the thousands of hungry Gold rushers. 

Such were his riches, that Livermore bought a two-story, had it disassembled house and shipped it in "Around the Horn , about 18,000 miles as the sail boat sailed, around Cape Horn from the East Coast. It is believed to be the first wooden building in the Livermore Tri-Valley.

In the early years, Livermore was known for its large hotels and vineyards.  In the 1880's the agricultural base grew to include wheat and hay.  Mining came to town in the 1920's. Livermore lent its assistance to the Airforce and Navy during World War II and the Cold War.  Livermore played a critical role in the Manhattan project and the subsequent development of America's nuclear program.
