About Costa Mesa

 With a population of about 120,000 residents (2016), Costa Mesa ranks as the 54th largest city in California.  After incorporation in 1953, Costa Mesa has grown from a farming town into a major suburb, complete with retail, commerce and light manufacturing. 

The city's lands were first occupied by native Americans for the past several thousand years.  The Spanish were the first settlers (1800 ish), establishing a grand 62,000 acre (100 sq.mi.) ranch occupying  the Costa Mesa and surrounding areas.  After the Mexican-American war, California was incorporated into  the United States and American settlers claimed or purchased the lands in the area including the former town of Fairview. In 1889, a flood pretty much wiped the city from the map and did not recover for decades.  

With the arrival of the railway, agriculture prospered and the economy gained steam. In 1920 the city's official name, Costa Mesa or coast table (Spanish) in homage to its location on a plateau.
The population surged with World War II, with many thousands occupying the Air Base at Santa Ana. By 1980, the population increased four-fold.

Today, the economy is literally devoid of basic manufacturing as most jobs are in the public sector.  One exception is IT giant, Experian that provided IT services to the planet, which may or may not be a good thing.
