With a population of about 100,000 people (2016 est), Compton is the 71st largest city in California.  Incorporated in 1888, it is one of the oldest cities in North America.

Compton is known as the "Hub City" due to its central location to the townships of Sunny Cove, Leland, Downtown Compton, and Richland Farms. Hub city people are generally working class with a smattering of middle class.  The population is very young with an average age of 25 - which is 10 years younger than the national average of 35.

Compton's first settlement was birthed by the Spanish.  Most all of the lands of present day Compton was deeded by the Spanish Crown to a Senior JJ Dominguez.  The Dominguez clan would run a huge rancho operation for nearly 100 years - until the Anglo invasion that came with the aftermath of the 1848 Mexican-American War.

Thereafter, American immigrants acquired almost all the land north of the Rio Grande.  In 1867, a group of pioneers came to the Compton area seeking a new lifestyle. The gold fields were in decline, work was tedious and wages poor.  Miners and their families sought something better and more lasting and places like Compton offered hope. These new settlers named their village Gibsonville.  The early days were not kind, as the weather was harsh, rainy and cold.  If we were there freezing on our humble homestead, we would have begged daily for a little global warming no doubt. Firewood was scarce and needed to be brought in from the Pasadena hills.  In the hard times, many would leave, but enough braved the harsh conditions to keep the town alive.

Did you know?  Global warming fans who never studied history should take note.  According to tree-ring studies, in the past, California had several periods of drought that lasted from 50 to more than 100 years.  If you don't study history, you won't know that weather swings were much, much worse than that of today. 

By 1888, Compton had just 500 people, who, none the less incorporated their large village as a city.  While there wasn't a thriving agricultural business in the area, land was cheap and one could support a family simply on what they could grow and build - with their bare hands. 

Compton took off in the roaring 1920's, a junior college was built and a diversity of small businesses sprung to life.  In 1933, an earthquake devastated the town and the town stagnated for a decade or so.  Blacks from the south moved to Compton in the 50's and helped to build a self-sustaining community.

Compton still retains some of its agricultural backbone.   At one time Compton real estate was a sought after commodity by wealthy blacks, however, today Compton has fallen out of favor.  Interestingly, Compton bucks the trends, having favorable tax rates and relatively low crime rate and Compton's black population is more affluent than its white neighbors.
