This former Buena Park attraction, a giant alligator farm, might be the strangest animal park that ever existed outside of Jurassic Park.  Believe it or not, many years before there was a Disneyland, a very peculiar place called Alligator Farm existed just up the road. This odd place charged just just a quarter for admission. 

Daring, low IQ or insane visitors could play, ride, and feed live alligators.  Not mentioned in the promotional material is the number of "Darwin Award" customers that were bitten and maimed. Featuring more than 1,000 alligators, it remained in its location of Buena Park, CA until it shut down in 1984.

The Spanish were the first Europeans to settle in the area.  In the name of the King of Spain, they established enormous ranchos with beautiful adobe structures and massive herds of cattle and horses.  Little did they know, the Rancho Los Coyotes adobe headquarters would lay on what is now Los Coyotes Country Club’s golf course.

The Buena Park lands were transferred to Mexican authority in 1822 and into Anglo-American hands, as part of the treaty from the Mexican-American War.  LA took off with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad.  Now,big east coast money, talent and visitors could get on board and visit California   In 1878 it took a mere 83 hours to travel from New York City to San Francisco in comparison a full season by wagon train.

It is unusual that there is no consensus opinion about how Buena Park got its name. Perhaps it comes from the Illinois city, perhaps it is a remnant of a Spanish family or maybe some cowboys came up the name for lack of a better word (Spanish meaning is "good park")?

The city of Buena Park was incorporated in 1953. It was an agricultural center for a century and a half, particularly in dairy, wine and citrus products.  Buena Park is now predominantly a suburb and commercial hub.
